Looking at me across his garden fence, Alfred Voigtländer asks me where I am going with all that luggage. “To Zurich”, I answer. He invites me into his house. He shows me all the television channels he can receive and all his colourful suits in his wardrobe. He gives me some bread, chocolate, liver sausage, sugar, coffee cream and a glass of schnapps. As I am leaving he waves and says, “I will pay for the photos you took. I have always paid for everything, all my life."
